Pioneer Square

Around Seattle...So much to do, so little time!

Spending time in Seattle will require some astute decision-making, as there is much to experience.

Local points of interest include:

Pike Place Market – This historic market was saved from demolition in the 1970’s and is now a thriving market at the base of Pike Street overlooking the harbor. Among other things, you can get a latte at the original Starbucks.

Seattle Center – Created for the 1962 World’s Fair, this 74-acre park, arts and entertainment center is home to the iconic Seattle Space Needle, the Chihuly garden and Glass Museum, the EMP (Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum and Hall of fame), the Pacific Science Center and Boeing IMAX Theater, as well as many other attractions.

The Waterfront – The Seattle Waterfront extends from Pioneer Square on the south to the Shilshole Marina on the north. In between, in addition to the view of the Puget Sound, can be found the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Sculpture Park, Myrtle Edwards Park, cruise ship docks and ferry terminals, as well as shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

Ferries to the Islands - There are numerous islands and parks in Puget Sound readily accessible by ferry, and all offer a unique perspective on the Pacific Northwest.

Chihuly Glass Studio and School at Pilchuck - The Pilchuck Glass School was founded in 1971 as a one-summer glassblowing workshop by glass artist Dale Chihuly. Since then it has become the world’s most comprehensive center for glass art education, hosting over 500 students and artists each summer.

Pilchuck’s philosophy of education is similar to that of the Salon and flows from Dale Chihuly’s original idea of “artists teaching artists.” For over forty years, that concept still holds true and the original core values of the school endure: to inspire creativity, transform individuals, and build community.

Seattle Art Museum - In addition to its permanent collection, the Seattle Art Museum will be presenting a special exhibition, Miró: The Experience of Seeing, from February 13 through May 25th. The exhibition is drawn from the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, and features 50 paintings, drawings and sculptures made between 1963 and 1983

Volunteer Park - A landmark in the heart of Seattle, Volunteer Park houses the Volunteer Park Conservatory with five “houses” containing thousands of plant species, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Woodinville Wine Country - Protected from Seattle’s marine climate by the Cascade Mountains, Woodinville Wine Country is just 30 minutes northeast of Seattle in the beautiful Sammamish River Valley, and is home to over 90 wineries and tasting rooms. The warm, arid climate of Eastern Washington’s Columbia Valley boast ideal sandy, gravelly soils, and valley vineyard temperatures consistently hover in the mid-80’s during the summer, with warm days and cool nights during the fall to protect the grapes natural acidity and ripen the fruit to perfection.

Public Transport - Seattle has an excellent public transportation system, so it is relatively easy to do without a car rental. The Sound Transit light rail runs from Seattle’s SeaTac International airport directly to the Union Station in Pioneer Square. The ride takes about an hour and costs only $2.50.

For downtown transportation, the Metro Bus travels up and down 3rd Avenue and there is no fare within a 12 block radius of Downtown.

Outside the CIty - Major attractions a short distance from Seattle include Crystal Mountain (1.5 hours), Mount Rainier ( 3 hours, with Lodging available at the Paradise Hotel), and Vancouver , BC, Canada (2.5 hours).
