Review of the International Decorative Artisan League (IDAL) Convention

For 26 years, the Annual Decorative Artisans League Convention and Expo has been the primary educational and social event for everyone in the industry from aspiring beginners to seasoned professionals and the IDAL board delivered another jam packed convention in July. People enjoyed Embassy Suites complimentary breakfast and happy hours & easy access to the convention center next door – especially as the temperatures reached high 90’s and heat index topped 115°.
According to Linda Banning, 2010-2011 IDAL Board President, 2011 had the highest attendance in several years at 590 (167 more than 2010). There were 26 classes taught by talented new & returning instructors and I heard comments from many happy students. We hope you will join Golden in thanking our IDAL board members for all the work they do to make this event successful!
Expo Grand Opening on Thursday night was a festive occasion attended by 219 IDAL members who registered for the full convention. The opening is a highlight of the five-day convention as it brings together buyers and sellers as well as old friends for the first time since last year. We all enjoyed chatting with old & new friends, seeing new products and enjoying excellent food sponsored by Sherwin Williams.
EXPO was busy with many first time visitors and many demonstrations & hands on painting opportunities . Industry favorites, Pierre Finkelstein and Melanie Royals were busy demonstrating in the EXPO when they weren’t busy teaching classes. Faux Effects’ booth was busy as painters had an opportunity to create squares that will be assembled into giant mosaic mural to be installed at their headquarters. Golden Artist Colors and Tara Art Materials sponsored a mural project based on a Pascal Amblard/ William Cochran design featuring an artist working in his studio with many of his art pieces around him. Thanks to all the painters who helped on these projects and thanks to all who stopped by the Golden booth to watch the painting develop while enjoying Chocolate Pizza – a specialty hand delivered from upstate NY.
FREE Lectures on Friday afternoon were well attended and William Cochran and Amy Howard’s presentations were Standing Room Only.
It was great to see so many of our friends in Hampton and we look forward to seeing you next year in Reno, NV – mark your calendars now July 25-29! Room rate is only $69 so hope to see you there.
