The Top 5 myths of the Salon

“The Top 5 Salon Myths”, by Kim Dokka
This year, the Salon is being held in Atlanta, GA, April 7th-10th, 2011. I'd like to take this opportunity to clear up some common misperceptions about this gathering of decorative painters from around the world.
5) Salon is not open to the Public because then the secret would be out.
This is a myth. The public is welcome to attend, watch, ask questions of the participants and learn as much as any of the painters themselves.
4) Salon participants are invited by a secret ballot delivered by the tooth fairy while they sleep.
Ha, ha! The tooth fairy isn’t involved at all! Any painter can apply by following the directions on the Salon website and communicating with the host. This occurs in November preceding the spring event. See
3) When participating in Salon for the 1st time you must demonstrate for a panel of judges like an American Idol style audition.
Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, or Paula Abdul have never attended a Salon. However, participants are expected to paint for the public either by demonstrating on his/her own panel or on the group mural.
2) Salon is like a Star Trek convention - you leave with bags full of the latest and greatest gear for painting out of this Universe.
Well, actually, the Salon is a non-commercial, non-trade show event. What you’ll leave with is only what you’re prepared to take: photos, memories, ideas and conversations with “serious” painters.
1) Salon participants are allowed to make up their own marbles especially if they lose them.
We have no comment on this aspect of the Salon, except to say that it brings together the best decorative painters in the world for an amazing event with a great atmosphere of camaraderie, fun, sharing, learning - and it all circles around decorative painting!
We hope to see you there! Kim Dokka, Salon Host 2011
